21 November 2014 - Book Review: Red Kayak
Age 12-16. 5 Stars. Although Cummings’ excellent writing is very enjoyable to read, this is a serious book, and sensitive readers will rightfully be troubled by it. Brady has something significant to lose no matter what he does, and although his choices do eventually lead to a satisfying conclusion, the whole story is tinged with grief. Even this sadness is an opportunity for good, though: this ordinary boy looks a senseless death in the face, and rather than retreating he takes action to help. In this action he discovers the kind of person he really is.

Rating: In Charles Dickens’ classic masterpiece, the miserable Scrooge is given a chance to repent of his selfish lifestyle when he is visited by four spirits — first, his tormented former business partner, sentenced to wander the netherworld until he has atoned for his sins — and then three “Spirits of Christmas,” who show him [...]

7 September 2010 - Book Review: Cinderella
Age 04-08. 5 Stars. Given the popularity of Disney’s cartoon Cinderella, there are surprisingly few excellent versions of the original fairy tale available, but if you can get your hands on this one you may have no desire to keep looking.

25 June 2010 - Book Review: Saturdays and Teacakes
Age 04-08. 5 stars. This story, told in the voice of a nine- or ten-year-old boy, tells of his weekly trip to his grandmother’s home… While the mood is somewhat idyllic, the story portrays a timeless relational scene where two family members care for one another in a stable, loving relationship. I especially appreciate the way the boy models cheerful manual work in service of someone else. A wonderful read

Transfixed by her beauty, they set about earning money to buy her… This story provides a view of a close friendship between siblings, an interesting and challenging goal for both protagonists, healthy family relationships, and respect for authority. It is romantic, refreshing, and inspiring, full of beauty and life.
Today more than ever, Christians need to learn how to discern the good and the bad in what they read, to recognize quality, and to train their sensibilities so that they enjoy what is excellent. In other words, they need to be critics and not just consumers. — , Reading Between the Lines, 30
