1 October 2011 - Book Review: Mailing May
Age 04-08. 4 Stars. Taking advantage of the new 1914 postal regulations allowing packages as large as fifty pounds, he pastes some stamps and an address card to the back of her coat and leaves her in the care of her cousin Leonard, who manages the mail car on the train, and she gets to visit her grandmother after all.
16 August 2011 - Book Review: Chibi, A True Story From Japan
Age 04-08. 4 Stars. This is the story of Oka-san, a mother duck who hatches ducklings in the Mitsui Office Park in Tokyo, Japan… In many ways the story parallels the American classic Make Way For Ducklings, but Chibi, based on true events, has a more journalistic feel.
15 August 2011 - Book Review: Smoky Night
Age 04-08. 4 Stars. This is a serious story which may be upsetting to some readers. It was inspired by the 1992 Los Angeles riots… If parents feel the need to discuss these kinds of events with their children, this book book may be a helpful way to open the conversation.
24 July 2011 - Book Review: Parade
Age 00-04. 4 Stars. In his inimitable style, Crews manages to capture the movement and excitement of a street parade, allowing young children to enjoy the experience at a safe remove. It’s a quick read with only a few well-chosen words per page, and it repeats well. Not everyone will love Crews’ distinctive artistic style, but it is quite popular with preschoolers and his good writing helps to balance it.

17 July 2010 - Book Review: What Do People Do All Day?
Age 00-04. 4 Stars. Richard Scarry had a tremendous gift for telling stories that, while simple in plot, are rich in visual detail so that, having been read aloud once, they provide hours of entertainment for prereaders to enjoy at their leisure… In this book, Scarry introduces individual citizens of Busytown, then tells short stories about specific projects they are involved in… Each story demonstrates the value of work, both for the individuals who perform it and those who enjoy its effects. It’s a wonderfully orienting book, helping even very young children understand the interworkings of their society.
